How the home estimate becomes your plan

The five fields on the home page are the first questions of the full plan. "Get the full picture" carries them into a nine-step guided plan, and nothing in it is required.
The nine steps are household, kids and college, accounts, contributions, income, real estate, spending, market and tax, then review. Skip any of them. Anything you leave empty uses a default, and the plan marks which figures are still defaults.
Until you sign in, your browser holds the plan rather than our servers. Signing in moves it into your account. It moves once — after that your account holds the copy that counts, and a plan you started in a different browser stays in that browser.
Once you have a saved plan, the home page estimator changes meaning. It shows your real numbers, but editing it there is a what-if: those edits don't save. Change your plan in the plan itself.
